Shelby Sells, sat down with Mamadoux Model and resident L.A. "It Girl" Anabel Englund to talk about what it means to be a Mamadoux model, her music, and her goals for spreading the love in 2015...
(Shelby Sells) State your name / age / occupation:
My name is Anabel Englund. I'm 22 years old, I'm a singer and songwriter.
Where are you from?
I was born in New York and raised in LA.
Do you like west coast living?
Well, recently I've been traveling a lot to Europe and South America, so coming back here... I don't know. Maybe I haven't reached out to them, but I want to be surrounded by creative people... new people... I love change. I mean, I love LA, but I just want to live somewhere else (laughs).
I think LA is a good home base, but I agree with you in that we should all be traveling and experiencing new cultures!! It's so good to get out of your comfort zone and try new things.
You have to travel to gain knowledge and figure out what's really going on in the world!
Honestly I can't even be anywhere (even London, which I love) for more than two weeks. I get the itch. I'm a travel addict, it's crazy!
I feel you girl! How did you get introduced to Mamadoux?
Umm, i think it just kind of happened. I don't remember specifically. I think I saw Mamadoux and thought "woah! what the fuck those designs are really cool" (laughs). It's so cool and Elliott's mind is so brilliant. The fact that he works so hard, he has these amazing ideas and he's showing the world what futuristic is. It's comfy, it's sexy, it's everything!
What's your favorite thing about Mamadoux?
Kind of like what we were just talking about... there's pieces he makes you could wear on stage or some that are just so comfy, you can wear them all the time.
I love the versatility of the clothes. Have you ever worn any of his pieces while performing?
I've worn two on stage and the last time my whole face was painted gold and I was in this green gloved Alien Suit. I loved it! I looked at myself in the mirror and I was like "what the fuck", I didn't even recognize myself. Then I looked at the photos and I was blown away... I've never seen anything like that anywhere!
Do you think your fans are down for such a fun look?
I mean I'm down for it so... I think they should be down with it too!! (laughs) I do things to make myself happy - if it ends up making other people happy then great, but I shouldn't have to prove anything to anyone to make them happy.
Once you start letting people influence how you think and what you do, you start losing what makes you, you. Like- please don't tell me what to do!
Describe the personality of a "Mamadoux Girl".
I think it could be anyone honestly. Getting to have my face painted or caked with glitter, wearing a tight little bodysuit on stage while my hair is rainbow and my eyebrows are purple was SO MUCH FUN!
The time I wore the green bodysuit... it took me to a different level of performing. It makes me feel like I'm a different entity when I wear Mamadoux. It's like- this isn't me everyday, but it's me when I want it to be! (giggles)
...Which is great!!! It's so amazing to have the option of being a glitter rave Mamadoux goddess. It's so fun to dress up and fuck around.
It's almost as if wearing Mamadoux gives people the confidence to take themselves to the next level, right?
That's the thing- anyone can pull off the look as long as they're owning it!! You have to own it; if you don't you're going to look like shit. SORRY (laughs). That's what being a "Mamadoux Girl" is - it's a confident, fun, alter-ego. A rainbow goddess!
So cute! :-) What is you're favorite piece out of the collection?
My favorite piece out of the collection is... comfort-wise (I have to get on planes a lot and I need something comfy, "airport wear" that's still cute) Mamadoux hoodies and jackets are great with some little leggings. I need to look cute all the time (laughs) I know that sounds douchey.
As far as performance pieces go, I like the high cut one-pieces. I've been waiting for Elliott to finish the new collection because I need EVERYTHING! Every single piece is different and unique.
They really are one of a kind and unique, which makes you feel special and not like every other girl who shops at Urban Outfitters hahaha.
What drew you to music?
I think music drew itself to me; it's always been around in my family. My entire dad's side is always singing. It's a catharsis. It's everything. I'd cry if i didn't have my voice. I'd probably cry every day (laughs). I need music and I need my voice.
Well your voice is incredible so cheers to you!
What do you think your ultimate goal with music is? How long have you been pursuing it as a career?
It's just been for fun up until now. Recently I signed a record deal (360 through Warner), so I've been more focused on creating my EP and album. I've been finding myself through this whole process.
Do you see yourself evolving?
Yea, definitely! What I found was when I'm writing music for myself or about myself, it's always sad (laughs) I can't write a happy song.
Haha awww, you're so sweet!!
Where do you draw your inspiration?
From the trees, the ocean, my family and animals. From my own experiences and other people's emotions. I'm a big people watcher. I spend more of my energy watching people at a party then actually mingling with them. Sometimes I'm a little more focused on other people's conversations than having my own (laughs).
People-watching is definitely a favorite pastime of mine too. Especially in my line of work... I like to call it "social studies" haha! Everyone is so different... it's nice to explore people and their various personalities and see what they're about.
How has rave culture influenced you?
My first rave ever was the last EDC that was in LA. It was my senior year of high school. I used to love the whole EDM thing. I used to make kandy. I made one that said "pussy" on it (laughs).
I've gotten away from that scene and more towards house music now... I'm playing Holy Ship in February. I'm so fucking excited! It's going to be like- raving on a boat. I get to be flown out, I feel so lucky!! Obviously rave culture has affected me because it's where I started; I love it. PLUR!
LMAO I need a pussy bracelet in my life!!
What's your goal with music? Do you have a message?
My goal with music is to spread the love and the word. Recently I've been working with a lot of different producers making some really sad music, but you have to let the sad out to let the good in. I think it's going to be completely different from what I normally create but I need to get it out.
I've had a lot of life experiences and stories I need to tell that I feel like I can share through music. I have a lot to say and I feel like I can say it through my music. Obviously I love traveling all the time, but ultimately I want people to hear my words and sing along.
I'm a sucker for lyrics. I feel like that's the best way to connect with the artist. I respect that.
What's your creative process?
I just write, write, write all the time. I have a little journal in my backpack at all times. I don't like typing on my phone or on the computer. I need to see my handwriting. My biggest creative outlet is writing.
Even if I don't have a journal I'll write on the back of receipts or whatever I can find. I have a huge dufflebag full of journals dated back from when I was 7 years old.
Hell yea! I have so many notebooks full of scribbles and "word vomit".
How do you feel when you perform in front of a bunch of people?
I love it! There's nothing I love more than performing for people; it gives me a way to be someone that I'm not at all. The minute I'm on stage, I'm someone different and it's the best. I always remember the high of it. You get to make connections with everyone in the audience.
I love it, must be such an adrenaline rush!! :-P
What's a goal of yours for 2015?
My goal is to only surround myself with creative people. I don't want to be around people who don't want to do anything. I read this thing Madonna said- she doesn't want to be the smartest person in the room, that way she can learn from those around her. That made me realize- what am i doing!? Be surround by creative people and art all the time- NO bullshit!
